Protecting an existing mature tree from construction damage, soil compaction, or grade change is almost always less expensive and more impactful than trying to replace it later.

Tree Planting — Getting It Right From the Start

More trees die from improper planting than from any disease or pest. This is a well-documented fact in arboriculture, and it’s one that most homeowners don’t know until they’ve already watched an expensive tree fail to establish. Here’s what proper planting actually involves:

Species Selection

The most important planting decision you’ll make is species selection — and it’s more nuanced than most people realize. The right tree for your yard depends on soil type, drainage, available sunlight, proximity to structures and utilities, the mature size of the tree, its root behavior, its susceptibility to local pests and diseases, and your own aesthetic and functional goals.

In Houston specifically, species selection also means choosing trees adapted to our climate extremes — the summer heat, the periodic hard freezes, the alternating drought and flood cycles, and the alkaline clay soils that challenge so many species. We advise on species that are genuinely suited to your specific site rather than just what’s available at the nursery.

Site Analysis

Before a tree goes in the ground, we evaluate the planting site thoroughly. Soil drainage is particularly important in Houston — a tree planted in a low spot with poor drainage will struggle from day one regardless of species. We check for underground utilities, assess root competition from existing trees, and evaluate sun exposure and wind exposure to match the species to the site.

Planting Depth

Planting depth is one of the most commonly made mistakes in residential tree planting — and one of the most consequential. A tree planted too deep will slowly decline over years as the buried root crown is unable to function properly. The root flare — the point where the trunk begins to widen toward the roots — should be at or slightly above grade. We confirm proper depth on every planting we oversee.

Soil Preparation

Houston’s clay soils present real challenges for newly planted trees. We assess whether soil amendment is needed, what type of amendment is appropriate for the species, and how to prepare the planting hole to give the tree’s roots the best possible environment for establishment.

Root Ball Handling

How the root ball is handled at planting significantly affects establishment. Circling or girdling roots need to be identified and corrected at planting — not discovered three years later when they’ve begun to strangle the trunk. Container-grown trees, balled-and-burlapped trees, and bare-root trees each require specific handling to maximize survival.

Mulching

Proper mulching is one of the highest-return things you can do for a newly planted tree. A 3–4 inch layer of organic mulch applied in a wide ring around the root zone retains moisture, moderates soil temperature, reduces compaction, and suppresses competing grass and weeds. The mulch should never touch the trunk — a common mistake that creates conditions for rot and pests at the base of the tree.

Post-Planting Care

Establishment — the period during which a new tree develops sufficient root structure to sustain itself without supplemental care — typically takes one to three years depending on species and size. During this period, consistent, deep watering is critical. We’ll give you a specific care plan for any tree we help plant, including watering frequency, fertilization timeline, and what to watch for as the tree establishes.

Frequently Asked Questions — Tree Planting & Preservation

Fall is generally the best time to plant most tree species in Houston — roughly October through December. Cooler temperatures reduce transplant stress, and the mild Houston winter gives roots time to establish before the demands of summer heat arrive. Spring planting is also viable, though trees planted in spring have less establishment time before summer stress. Summer planting is generally not recommended for most species, as the combination of heat and establishment stress significantly reduces survival rates. We'll give you species-specific guidance when we develop your planting plan.
Newly planted trees need consistent, deep watering during their establishment period — typically one to three years. Deep watering means applying water slowly to allow it to penetrate 12–18 inches into the soil, encouraging roots to grow downward. Frequency depends on soil type, species, weather conditions, and tree size. As a general starting point, most newly planted trees in Houston need watering two to three times per week during warm months and once a week during cooler periods — but we'll develop a specific watering plan based on your tree and your site.
It depends on the species and the distance. Some species with aggressive surface root systems — particularly silver maples, willows, and certain poplars — can create foundation issues and are generally not appropriate for planting near structures. Other species, particularly smaller ornamentals and well-chosen shade trees planted at sufficient distance, are perfectly fine. The general rule is to plant no closer than half the tree's mature canopy spread from a foundation. We'll give you specific guidance based on the species you're considering and the layout of your property.
For overhead utility lines, we recommend planting only small-maturing trees (under 20 feet at maturity) directly beneath them. Medium trees should be planted at least 20–25 feet from utility lines, and large trees at least 35–50 feet. Underground utilities require specific clearances depending on the utility type and root behavior of the species. This is one of the reasons site analysis matters so much — we identify all utilities before making planting recommendations.
A tree protection zone (TPZ) is the area around a tree that must be protected from construction activity to preserve the root system. It's typically calculated based on the tree's trunk diameter — a common standard is one foot of radius for every inch of trunk diameter, measured at 4.5 feet above grade. A tree with a 20-inch trunk diameter would have a TPZ radius of 20 feet. Encroaching on this zone with equipment, soil stockpiling, or excavation can severely damage or kill the tree even when the trunk itself is untouched. Fencing the TPZ before construction begins is one of the most important things you can do to protect a tree on a construction site.
With respect — yes, you should be concerned enough to get an independent assessment. Builders are understandably focused on the construction project, and tree protection is often not their area of expertise. We've seen many trees that were guaranteed to survive construction come back to us two years later in serious decline because root zone protection wasn't properly implemented. An independent pre-construction assessment from an ISA Certified Arborist gives you documentation of the trees' pre-construction condition, a professional opinion on their risk, and specific protection recommendations you can require as a condition of the project.
First, document everything — photographs of the damage, the date, who was responsible for the work. Then call us for an assessment. We can evaluate the extent of the damage, provide a prognosis for the tree, and prepare an arborist report and tree appraisal if you're pursuing compensation from the responsible party. Tree appraisals for legal and insurance purposes are one of the consulting services we provide, and certified documentation makes a significant difference in these situations.
This is a great question and one we help property owners answer all the time. Not every tree on a property is worth the same investment in preservation — some are structurally compromised, some are poor species choices for their location, and some are simply past the point where preservation makes economic sense. Others — a mature live oak, a well-placed bald cypress, an established pecan — are irreplaceable assets that warrant significant investment to protect. We help you make those distinctions clearly and objectively, so your preservation resources go where they'll have the most impact.
Sometimes, yes — it depends on how much of the root system was affected, the species' resilience, how quickly post-construction care begins, and what that care involves. Trees that have lost less than a third of their root system to construction damage often recover well with proper post-construction treatment — soil decompaction, fertilization, canopy reduction to balance the reduced root system, and careful monitoring. Trees that have lost more than half their root system have a significantly lower prognosis. We'll give you an honest assessment of a damaged tree's recovery potential and what the care program would realistically involve.
